Meeting # 3039 - Dr. Robert Holland: Technological development and the advance of history are undeniable forces of change in the world. However, neither creates progress in the larger sense of the word, namely, the sense that mankind is building incrementally and purposefully toward some goal of solving or transcending the flaws of human nature and limits of instrumental reality and finally arriving at a utopian historical endpoint. Progress is instead a myth, metaphor, and rhetorical device that provides meaning and hope yet tends to forestall positive change by masking deeper understanding of human projects. Dr. Robert Holland will examine the myth of progress in several of its manifestations.

Creating a Personal Plan for Peace
How World Peace Depends Upon Achieving Inner Peace
Meeting # 3036 - Karen Johnson, State Coordinator of The Peace Alliance / Illinois, states that in his book, Peace is Every Step, the monk Thich Nhat Hanh presented the theory that "We will achieve world peace when enough people achieve inner peace." While H.R. 808 and a Department of Peace provides a modern blueprint for peace through reduction and prevention of violence by addressing root causes, there is a bridge to be built between personal desire/responsibility for inner peace and government responsibility to create policy based on the collective/majority voice of its people. Tonight will discuss some of the key factors that may be keeping us, individually and/or collectively, from responding to stimuli from a heart at peace and how we might develop a person plan for peace."
